Baek Seo-won wipes away sweat at a pepper farm in Yanggu County, South Korea. It is the busiest time of year for the farm and Baek is new to the job.

“I knew farming was tough,” she says. “But now that I’ve actually tried it, I realize just how hard it really is.”

Baek is one of the many people who have swapped city life in Seoul for a new beginning in the countryside as the coronavirus pandemic changes the employment landscape.
South Korea’s economy has been struggling amid the pandemic. In June, the country recorded a 4.3% unemployment rate, the highest figure since data collection began in 1999.

Among his chief concerns is that the new recruits won’t last, perhaps because they can’t handle the hard work, get bored or go back to their old jobs.

The Urban Farm Manager will be responsible for day-to-day upkeep, maintenance and repair of Sprout by Design’s Urban Farms throughout the five boroughs of NYC, as well as supervising Open Garden Hours for youth and adults and running urban farming workshops. Urban Farms include soil, hydroponic, and aquaponic gardens, rooftop gardens and greenhouses, composting systems, chicken coops, and more. Applicants should have a wide range of knowledge about growing edibles, ideally in the North East. Experience taking care of small flocks of chickens is preferable. Another key component is experience with small-scale hydroponic and aquaponic growing systems: planting, daily upkeep, maintenance, and basic repairs.

Hilltop Urban Farm launches 2019 pilot Farmer Incubation Program in Pittsburgh

It will ultimately become the largest urban farm in the United States and serve as a resource for urban farming initiatives.
