Any resident of Bengaluru knows that a vacant plot is never vacant in the city. It invariably becomes a garbage dumping site and, sometimes, a public urinal.

Now, residents in upscale Koramangala have come up with a novel solution to deal with the chronic problem: community gardens. Residents of 1st Block are growing veggies, fruits and flowers for their own consumption in vacant sites in their neighbourhood, in an initiative of striking ingenuity.

‘Pratham Community Gardens’, a brainchild of Koramangala Residents Welfare Association (KRWA), is being implemented in three places on 60X40 dimension plots.

Indonesia: Jakarta Governor Calls on Jakartans to Use Vacant Lands for Urban Farming

“No matter how small the land is, if it (urban farming) is carried out massively and thoroughly in Jakarta, it will be highly helpful to maintain food security and environmental sustainability of the city,” he said.

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan called for urban farming and asked residents to use vacant lands in their houses or buildings to grow crops.

“For Jakartans, do not leave empty land without using it for plants, either land, buildings, or rooftops,” Deputy Governor for Tourism and Culture, Dadang Solihin, read Anies’ remarks on Monday, Nov. 30.

Anies reportedly could not attend the simultaneous harvest or Panen Serentak event held by the city’s Food, Marine, and Agriculture Security Agency (KPKP) today.
